The project was realised by the French architectural group Jean Nouvel, Pierre Soria and Architecture Studio. The intercultural institute made Jean Nouvel internationally known. Nouvel was awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989 for the design of the institute. On the southern façade, the incidence of sunlight is regulated by thousands of iris diaphragms behind the glass façade, which open and close continuously by computer control.
