Institut du monde arabe (IMA) by Jean Nouvel | The Institut du monde arabe (IMA) was founded in 1980 to promote understanding between France and the Arab world. The project was realised by the French architectural group Jean Nouvel, Pierre Soria and Architecture Studio. The intercultural institute made Jean Nouvel internationally known. Nouvel was awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989 for the design of the institute. On the southern façade, the incidence of sunlight is regulated by thousands of iris diaphragms behind the glass façade, which open and close continuously by computer control. In these artistically structured and evenly arranged panels, Nouvel drew on the motif of Masrabiyya from Arab architecture and thus achieved a synthesis of traditional ornamentation and high-tech architecture. - Realisiert mit Pictrs.com
